F.C. Street Sweeping in Advance of Parade

In advance of Monday’s Memorial Day parade and festival, Falls Church has scheduled street sweeping tomorrow, Friday, May 28, for certain areas of the City. The sweeping is for the safety of parade and festival participants and also will reduce the amount of pollutants entering streams, officials said in a release issued today.

The upcoming street sweeping schedule through June is below.

* Friday, May 28: Memorial Day parade route and municipal parking lots

* Monday, June 21: Commercial areas

* Tuesday, June 22 and Wednesday 23: Residential areas north of Broad Street

* Thursday, June 24 and Friday, June 25: Residential areas south of Broad Street

It is important that residents move vehicles off of residential streets between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. when street sweeping is scheduled for their area, the release said.  Parked vehicles impede the street sweeping equipment, resulting in less efficient and effective service.  Signs will be posted in advance of the street sweeping as a reminder to residents.

Street sweeping reduces the volume of pollutants entering local streams through the City’s 900 storm drain openings. The City contracts with Reilly Sweeping to provide Citywide street sweeping services. Using a tandem sweeping method, the first sweep picks up large, visible objects (paper, cans, cigarette butts and other large debris), while the second sweep vacuums fine particulate matter.

City residents who have questions about street sweeping or the schedule may contact the Department of Environmental Services at 703-248-5281.
