The Longfellow Middle School team took first place in the Northern Virginia Regional Mathcounts competitions Feb. 2.

The Longfellow team, with students Franklyn Wang, Scott Becker, Alex Sun, and William Sun, coached by Mary Jo Clark, took first in the Northern Virginia chapter with 18 schools competing. Longfellow students Franklyn Wang (first), Scott Becker (second), Haoyuan Sun (third), and Alex Sun (fourth) were the top four scoring individuals in the chapter.

Mathcounts is a national math enrichment, coaching, and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. Over 450 sixth- through eighth-grade students from 52 elementary and middle schools competed at the events.

The winning team and top two individuals who are not on the winning team from each chapter will compete at the Virginia State Mathcounts competition to be held on March 16 at the Dominion Power facility in Glen Allen.
