Mason Track Athletes to Compete at Regional Meet

Top George Mason High School track and field athletes will travel to Charlottesville for the 2A East Region Championships this Friday. The students representing Mason have qualified either by their running time or jumping distance in their individual events, or by placing in the top six at the Conference 35 meet last week.

The 25 high schools competing in the regional meet are Amelia County, Arcadia, Brunswick, Bruton, Buffalo Gap, Clarke County, East Rockingham, George Mason, Goochland, Greensville, King William, Luray, Madison County, Maggie Walker, Nandua, Nelson County, Nottoway, Page County, Prince Edward County, Riverheads, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Strasburg, Wilson Memorial, and Windsor.

Representing Mason at the regional meet, in the girls 100-meter dash will be Tara Holman, Vicky Addo-Ashong, Alex Hairston, Margarita Shevchenko, Eugenia Smith, and Joelle Randrianasolo. Korinne Wills will compete in the 100-meter hurdles. Coral Gillette, Elizabeth Ward, and Kaitlin Kutchma will compete in the 1,600-meter dash. Vicky Addo-Ashong, Alex Hairston, Margarita Shevchenko, and Eugenia Smith are set to represent Mason in the 4×100 relay, with Joelle Randrianasolo as an alternate. Tara Holman will compete in the 400-meter dash. Korinne Wills, Mia Sawyer, and Sabine Wills will compete in the 300-meter hurdles. Blaise Sevier, Isabelle Kessler, Elizabeth Ward, Sarah Macris, and Anna Sawyer will compete in the 800-meter run. Tara Holman and Eugenia Smith will compete in the 200-meter dash.  Grace Eye and Maria Turner will compete in the 3,200-meter run. Blaise Sevier, Isabelle Kessler, Mia Sawyer, and Sarah Macris are set to represent Mason in the 4×400 relay, with Anna Sawyer as an alternate. Vicky Addo-Ashong will compete in the long jump.

In boys events representing Mason at the regional meet, Michael Addo-Ashong will compete in the 100-meter dash. Huntley Campbell, Zach Ellis, Justin Divecha, and Julian Grippo are set to represent Mason in the 4×800 relay. Preston Custer and Michael Addo-Ashong will compete in the 110-meter hurdles. John Marshall will compete in the 1,600-meter run. Jacob Plata and Nathan Ward will compete in the 400-meter dash. Michael Addo-Ashong, Zach Welch, and Max Aifer will compete in the 300-meter hurdles. Truman Custer, Preston Custer, John Marshall, and James Schneider will compete in the 800-meter run. Austin Gogal will compete in the 200-meter dash. Truman Custer, Preston Custer, Jacob Plata, and Nathan Ward are set to represent Mason in the 4×400 relay, with James Schneider as an alternate.

Students qualifying by time or place at the Region Championships will advance to the state meet in Radford and compete on June 6 and 7. Several Mustangs have already qualified to represent Mason at states: Vicky Addo-Ashong (in long jump, 100-meter hurdles, and 100-meter dash), Tara Holman (in the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes), Blaise Sevier (in the 3,200-, 1,600-, and 800-meter runs), Isabelle Kessler (in the 800-meter run), Mia Sawyer (in the 300-meter hurdles), and Korinne Wills (in the 300-meter hurdles) for the girls, and Truman Custer (in the 1,600- and 800-meter runs) for the boys. The girls 4×100 relay team and both the girls and boys 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams have also qualified for the state meet.
