When most George Mason High School students were still enjoying the spoils of the holiday season last Friday, the Mason wrestlers were not only competing in, but also hosting a day-long tournament. In its second year, the George Mason Holiday Classic brought teams in from as far away as Richmond and Madison County.

George Mason High School’s boys varsity basketball team finished in eighth place in the third annual Joe Cascio Holiday Classic tournament last week. The Mustangs lost to Freedom High School and Lee High School after being bounced from the first round by Falls Church High School, who hosted the tournament, in a 57-51 loss.

George Mason High School’s boys varsity basketball team lost its first home game in over two years in a 59-52 loss to Strasburg High School last Thursday. The Rams benefited from “tentative” guard play from the Mustang back court, according to Coach Chris Capannola, as well as foul trouble from the Mustangs and an early benching of senior forward Will Nunley.

This past weekend in the Raider Classic at Loudon County High School, the George Mason High School wrestling team saw both the return of their starting 152-pounder and their first team victory of the season.

The George Mason High School boys basketball Mustangs edged out the Central High School Falcons, 56-54, on Tuesday night at Central in a district contest. Senior guard Nick Bourbeau scored the game-winning shot for the Mustangs, a reverse layup with 2.4 seconds left in overtime.

The George Mason High School girls varsity basketball team opened its regular season last week with wins against two district opponents. Last Wednesday, the Mustangs beat the Madison County High School Mountaineers 43-38 and went on to narrowly escape defeat in their home opener last Friday against the Clarke County High School Eagles with a 49-46 victory.
