The News-Press Presents Shop Falls Church!

fcnp-coverdesign-upload

‘Tis the season! Alas, amid the cheer, it can be challenging, thinking of all the remote places one may feel it is essential to visit to find the perfect gift that will excite even the most nonplussed teenager or impress a distant second cousin and her new twins. But rather than be dazzled by all those TV ads that require you to battle traffic to distant locations, why not calm down, and circumscribe your efforts to a more relaxed and doable set of parameters?

That’s the whole idea of the News-Press’ Shop Falls Church campaign this holiday season. Within the Little City’s 2.2 square miles are treasures to be discovered, both in the form of gifts and decorations, and the more intangible benefits of moving among friends and neighbors.

It’s fun, it’s very appreciated, and it’s self serving, too. Consider the amount of time and money you’ll save not having to venture out to some giant shopping center somewhere. Consider how your shopping local will come back to you in the form of sales taxes that get returned to the localities that collect them. Consider how your doing business locally buoys the local economy in other ways, too, including by increasing the buying power of local employees to put their dollars, from you, back into the local economy, themselves.

Besides, it’s all about the holiday spirit, and the glow that magnifies when one willfully acts to benefit and enhance the glow in another real person, someone you know or can get to know over time. You can’t do better than to deepen those bonds of community that derive from deciding to keep your holiday shopping dollars close to home.

Argia’s would like to share with you this holiday season one of our customers’ favorite recipe. Argia’s Holiday Special: Pork tenderloin, wrapped in pancetta, and grilled, drizzled with a sweet Amaretti sauce, served with a delectable diced Portobello, pancetta, and potato hash with a side of grilled asparagus.

What you will need:
• 10 oz. pork tenderloin cut into four pieces • 4 slices of pancetta
• 1 medium Portobello • 1 Yukon Gold potato
• 4 oz. diced pancetta • 5 oz. asparagus
• 1 oz. Amaretto liquor • 2 oz. unsalted butter • 2 oz. crushed Ameretti cookies • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
• ½ teaspoon black pepper • 3 oz. veal stock
• 3 oz. extra virgin olive oil
First, let’s make the sauce. Take a skillet, place on low heat and melt 2 oz. of unsalted butter. Drop 2 oz. of finely crushed Amaretti cookies into the melted butter. Stir until a desired thick texture. Add 1 oz. Amaretto liquor and stir on low heat for one minute. Pour 3 oz. veal stock into the mixture and continue to cook on a simmer, for five minutes.

Now, let’s make the hash. Dice a Yukon Gold potato. Pour 3 oz. extra virgin oil into a pan on low heat. Drop the diced potatoes in and cook for three minutes. Now, add 4 oz. diced pancetta and continue to cook for three more minutes. Finally add your diced medium Portobello and cook for an additional three minutes.

Let’s move on to the meat. Cut your 10 oz. pork tenderloin into four even pieces. Wrap each individual piece with a slice of pancetta. Once complete, skewer the pieces together. Rub ½ teaspoon black pepper and a ½ teaspoon kosher salt evenly on the skewer. For a chef recommended medium temperature, grill on medium heat for 12 minutes. Finally take 5 oz. of asparagus and grill on medium heat for 5 minutes.

The last step is to sit down and ENJOY!

Bentley’s Diner – Putting the ‘B’ in Breakfast…

In 1959 The Governor’s House Inn opened its doors as one of the very first motor lodges on Route 50 in Falls Church, Virginia.

As the area began to grow an additional building with 25 units was added in coordination with a Three Chef’s Restaurant, a locally owned restaurant chain. The restaurant originally consisted of a small country-style breakfast counter with a half-dozen tables and booths. As time went by the Inn was franchised and additional buildings, banquet facilities, and pool were added growing it to a 120 room full service hotel.

With the addition of numerous restaurant chains in the early 80’s, like many locally owned restaurants long since gone, the pressure of chains led to this Three Chef’s location not being renewed and the space returned to the hotel. It was reopened as “Bentley’s” and quickly took the place of Three Chef’s as one of Falls Church’s favorite breakfast locations. During this time there were still many locally entrenched places – Sir Walter Raleigh’s, Mountain Jacks, Bob’s Big Boy, Hot Shoppes, Sign of the Whale, but as more and more franchises arrived there became fewer and fewer of the local “go to” spots left. When IHOP and Pancake House franchises arrived to the area the hotel ownership seeing the breakfast volume cut in half began considering closing Bentley’s and creating a continental breakfast area for their guests. Thankfully, due to their nostalgia for their regulars and the location they decided to first approach previous employees in hopes of finding a way to keep the name and history alive. Today, thanks to that decision and two generations of employees who grouped together to purchase the location, and most importantly the insistent dedication of the Bentley’s “Regulars” our little country diner in the City is once again one of the area’s Busiest Breakfast spots.

Truly locally owned and operated; Bentley’s Falls Church Diner is truly positioned to continue putting the “B” in Breakfast for many many decades to come…

Foxes Music Celebrates 60 Years in Business

2013 marks the 60th year that Foxes Music has been in business in the City of Falls Church. As we contemplate this milestone, we admittedly feel a certain measure of pride, but mostly we feel a deep sense of gratitude to our customers for all the business they have given us over the years.

Dorothy and Ralph “Curly” Fox first opened Foxes Music on January 20, 1953, President Eisenhower’s Inauguration Day. It began as a dance studio and music school with a small retail operation on the side. Mrs. Fox taught dance lessons while Curly, a local drummer, handled the instrumental side. Tragically, he died only a year after the store opened, leaving his wife to persevere on her own.

Mrs. Fox turned out to be a shrewd businesswoman indeed, who grew Foxes into one of the most respected music stores in the area, with an unparalleled selection of sheet music and a booming school rental business.

In 1988, Mrs. Fox sold the business to Jim Edmonds, an entrepreneur with a love of music who had recently retired from the World Bank. Jim decided not only to preserve Mrs. Fox’s basic business model, but to expand it dramatically, greatly increasing the instrument department and moving the store to its present location on S. Washington St. in 1993.

In 2006, Jim sold the business to his two longtime managers: Kevin Landes and Eric Wagner and Marie Desrosiers, the store’s bookkeeper. This kept the store’s continuity unbroken, as Eric and Kevin had both started with Mrs. Fox and had been managing the shop for decades.

Since buying the business, we have strived to be careful stewards of Mrs. Fox’s basic vision: to be an education oriented business, offering superlative service to the area’s music students, teachers, and performing arts community. We feel strongly that independent brick and mortar businesses are a core part of the city’s unique character, and work hard to play whatever role we can to make Falls Church the kind of place people want to visit, shop in and reside. We want to extend a heartfelt thanks to all who have supported us these past 60 years and hope to be here for many more.

New Orleans Cajun Seafood forsakes the rustic frills of other Cajun-style restaurants and focuses entirely on the food.

The menu offers an extensive variety of fried seafood, including soft shell crab, shrimp, catfish, and oysters. While the fried fare is sure to satisfy the casual customer, New Orleans Cajun Seafood specializes in all sorts of boiled shellfish, from snow crab legs to shrimp, but their specialty is crawfish. Shellfish from the boiled menu come in two-pound heaps and is served in a foil container and doused in the customer’s chosen sauce. Options include a butter sauce, a garlic sauce, their special Cajun sauce, and the “New Orleans Mixin’” which is a tasty combination of all three.

The menu covers all of the bases, from one Cajun food staple to another. Guests can start off with a savory Jambalaya while waiting for a Po’ Boy or platter of boiled shellfish slathered in a sauce of their choice.

Run by Khanh Nguyen and his wife, Sherry, the Seven Corners branch opened in April 2013. They opened up the first New Orleans Cajun Seafood restaurant there in 2007. After a very successful few years, especially with the local Vietnamese community, the Nguyens decided to open up a new location in Northern Virginia because of the large Vietnamese population here.
