Mustangs Farewell Senior Wrestlers

Last Thursday the George Mason High School varsity wrestling team competed in their final home match of the season, a quad meet versus AAA Edison and Liberty High School, as well as Bull-Run District rival Manassas Park.

Although the Mustangs dropped both head-to-head matches against Edison and Park, it was a joyous yet sad occasion for the team, as their four senior grapplers competed in the final home meet of their long careers at Mason.

Andy Millar, Roger O’ Brien, Ramsey Hanna and Rick Schumann all fought valiantly in their final meet, but were unable to steer the Mustang ship towards victory, as they fell 49-24 against Manassas, and 42-22 against Edison.

Taking on the Cougars in their first match of the night, Mason sophomore Tim Hillegass, junior Steve Parks, Hanna and Schumann all took home victories to lead the way for the Mustangs. All four were able to pin their opponents with relative ease, as Hillegass downed his in 1:45, Hanna in 1:30, Parks in 5:05, and Schumann in 2:51.

Once again the lack of weight classes for the Mustangs proved to be the decisive factor, as they forfeited four matches to Manassas, as well as five to Edison.

Against Edison, Schumann and Parks led the way for Mason, as they have done throughout the season. Hillegass, Hanna, Millar and sophomore Jake Schwind also contributed to the effort with victories against the AAA school.

Schwind took down his opponent in a mere 3:00, while Hillegass, Millar, Hanna, Parks and Schumann all won with scores of 15-6, 2-0, 14-12, 2-0, and 4-2, respectively.

The Mustangs were able to hold their own throughout their last home meet and with the district and region tournaments fast approaching, the four seniors on the squad will look to extend their final season.

The district tournament will be held at Manassas Park High School this Saturday, while the Region B tournament will take place at Strasburg the following weekend.
