Mason Scores Third at Scholastic Bowl Nationals

The Scholastic Bowl team of George Mason High School took third place for the small-school division of this year’s National Academic Quiz Tournament National High School Championship Tournament on May 25 – 27 in Chicago, Ill. They defeated the Alabama state champions, last year’s small-school runner-up, 300-115, and lost only narrowly to first-place winner, Danville, Ky., with a close 240 – 200 final score.

Overall, they placed 49th out of 160 teams from schools across the nation, including large schools, magnet schools and private schools. This season, the Mason quiz bowlers came home with district, region and state championships. Seniors David Maher and Matt Peppe and juniors Peter Davis and Brennan Downey represented George Mason at the tournament. Individually, Maher ranked 75th and Peppe 98th out of around 700 total players.
