Bishop Girls, Lacrosse Players are Ones to ‘Watch’
Two Bishop Ireton High School seniors, Lauren Gray and Claire Banta, have been named to the Tewaaraton Foundation 2009 Watch List. They are among the top Washington and Baltimore high school seniors named to the watch list, published this month by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. 
The Foundation sponsors the collegiate and high school men’s and women’s player of the year awards which will be presented in Baltimore on May 28.
This makes the first time Bishop Ireton has enjoyed two players named to the Baltimore/Washington All-Regional Team. Gray has signed to play next fall at Georgetown University and Banta inked her commitment to the University of Virginia.
The Tewaaraton Award Foundation, in conjunction with The University Club of Washington, D.C., formally established the “Tewaaraton Trophy” on August 29, 2000. It is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. The Tewaaraton Trophy is now presented annually following the collegiate season at a banquet honoring the finalists and winners.
Highlanders Flint & Brosnan Help Beltway Win
Two First-Team, All-District basketball players from McLean High School, senior guards Peter Brosnan and Caity Flint were selected to play in the Northern Region All-Star game. On Saturday, March 21, Brosnan and Flint took center stage on the court during the second-annual basketball showcase, hosted by Digital Sports.
Flint for the girls and Brosnan for the boys, the two served on the Beltway team, facing off against the ‘Burbs at Centreville High School. With 34 at the half, the Beltway kicked it up a notch against the ‘Burbs who were three points ahead, winning the game 89-80.
McLean H.S. Softball Opens At Stone Bridge, Loses
The McLean High School Highlanders opened their season with an away game against Stone Bridge High on a cold and windy Friday night on March 20. The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning, when the bats came alive for the Highlanders.
McLean had five consecutive hits to include junior and team co-captain Brittany McCray’s single, junior Megan Sullivan’s single and RBI, sophomore Jessie Straub’s triple and a very nice bunt by sophomore Jamie Bell. McLean had four stolen bases, with junior and team co-captain Lauren McColgan owning two of them.
Stone Bridge scored two runs in the sixth inning, but the Highlanders’ defense would hold them there, with and the game ending at 4-2. McLean junior Lauren Sutherland was the winning pitcher for McLean.
McLean played their first home game against James Madison High School on Tuesday March 24 at 6:30 p.m., and lost 8-3. Up next for the girls is another home game this Friday, March 27 at 6:30 p.m., this time up against Thomas Jefferson High.
George Mason H.S. Girls Lacrosse Bounces Back
On Thursday, March 19, Mason shut out Park View High School 19-0. Then on Friday, March 20, they battled Washington & Lee High School for a one-point win of 11-10. This past Monday, the girls hit the road for an away game in Culpepper, Va., where they prevailed over the Eastern View High School Cyclones 12-7.
Against the Cyclones, senior attacker Sally Blakemore scored six goals, sophomore attacker and midfielder Abby Johansen had four goals, and sophomore midfielder Amanda Rolander and junior center Gwen Edwards each contributed one goal apiece.
Next up for the girls is a home game against Park View High come next Monday, March 30 at 6 p.m.
McLean H.S. Lacrosse Girls Win at Washington & Lee
During last Friday’s game, McLean High School’s girls varsity lacrosse team played an away game at Washington & Lee High School, winning 16-3.
Scoring players included senior midfielder Maggie Streeten for five goals, senior Hannah Zegler for five goals, freshman Mackenzie May for two goals, sophomore Liz Karpe for one goal, senior Molly Welch for one goal and freshman Carlyle Howard for one as well.
Junior goalkeeper Hannah Longwell made a total of 10 saves, with key plays including 13 forced turnovers for McLean, as well as senior midfielder Alexis Koeppen and Howard scoring their first season goals.
Next up for the girls was a doubleheader with the boys varsity team at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Langley High School. However, results were too late for press time.
TJHSST Boys Tennis Sweep Stone Bridge
The broom came out in Loudoun County as Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology’s (TJHSST) boys varsity tennis team swept Stone Bridge High School 9-0 on Wednesday, March 18. In the singles, were: No. 1 Edwin Zhang, 10-0; No. 2 Spencer Clark, 10-1; No. 3 Chris McPherson, 10-3; No. 4 Eric Bomgardner, 10-0; No. 5 Glen Hookey, 10-1 and No. 6 Spencer Frei, 10-1.
Doubles were made by No. 1 Zhang and Clark, 8-1; No. 2 Hookey and Frei, 8-2 and No. 3 Bomgardner and Anthony Lim, 8-2. Bomgardner was a direct substitute for the injured Sean Cheng, and Lim is his doubles partner.
However, Thomas Jefferson opened their 2009 season with a 7-2 win over Langley High School last Monday, March 16. In the singles, Jefferson’ s top two returning players from last year, were juniors Zhang and Clark, winning 10-1 and 10-3, respectively.
Juniors McPherson (3) and Cheng (4) fought hard but came up short 6-10 and 7-10. Rounding out the top six, seniors Hookey and Frei prevailed 10-6 and 10-5 in modest battles. Avenging their singles results, the No. 3 doubles team of McPherson and Cheng finished first with a 10-4 match-deciding win. Zhang and Clark, with Hookey and Frei, followed with 10-2 and 10-7 wins.
Marshall H.S. Girls Tennis Remains Undefeated
George C. Marshall High School girls varsity tennis team remains undefeated after a huge come-from-behind-victory. Playing away at Langley, a solid opponent, Marshall got off to a slow start.
Langley sprinted away with four singles matches but left the door cracked just enough to give Marshall a glimmer of hope. Coming away with key singles wins for Marshall were No. 1 singles freshman Faby Chaillo and No. 5 junior Sarah Doan. Knowing they had to sweep doubles, Marshall took to the courts with determination.
Slowly and stealthily, Marshall kept winning. First No. 2 double of junior Lauren Hopwood and senior Amanda Crider claimed victory. Then No. 1 Chaillo with sophomore Ana Dominguez won, evening out the match at four all.
Of course, the final match went to a tiebreaker, for which captains Astrid Adam, senior, and Kelly Crider, junior, provided the heroics, winning 7-1 and the team match.
Last Wednesday, March 18, in just the second match of the young Liberty-District girls tennis season, Marshall pulled out a stunning upset of W.T. Woodson High. Under blue skies and playing at home, Marshall played smart, kept their game plans simple and lead after singles: four matches to two.
Leading the way, No. 1 Chaillo, No. 2 Dominguez, No. 4 Amanda Crider, and No. 5 Doan were all victorious. The doubles team of Dominquez and Chaillo quickly eliminated any suspense and won the fifth point and match for Marshall.
Next up for the girls was a 4 p.m. match yesterday against Stone Bridge High School, but results were not in for press time.
Stuart H.S. Soccer Takes the Win at George Mason
J.E.B. Stuart High School’s boys varsity soccer team went head to head with the George Mason High School Mustangs during an away game this Monday, March 23, coming out with a 2-1 victory.
The win leaves the boys with a 3-1 season record, which began varsity-doubleheader win at Hayfield Secondary on Wednesday March 11. The Raiders’ one upset, 1-0, took place at T.C. Williams High.
The boys played Lee High at home yesterday, but results were too late for press time. Up next for the Raiders is a home game this Friday, March 27 against the Falls Church High School Jaguars, 0-4.
