Falls Church High
Baseball (1-6): Rain forced the cancellation of games against Washington-Lee and Stuart to start the week.
The Jaguars faced Wakefield last night, but the score was not available at press. Starting today and tomorrow, they have consecutive matchups against Washington-Lee at home and away at Edison High.
Boys Soccer (0-7): The Jaguars’ standing fell even further with a loss against Wakefield High last Wednesday. They faced mighty Edison yesterday, but the score was not available at press time. Coach Lee Bailey blames the rough season on a lack of consistency. They’ll try to break the cycle as they close out the season against Washington-Lee, Yorktown and Robert E. Lee.
Girls Soccer (1-6): The girls were supposed to host Edison on Tuesday, but that game was a wash. They’ll hook up at Washington-Lee tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Boys Tennis (1-8): Though rain stopped play across the Liberty District Tuesday, the boys tennis team was able to topple Mount Vernon for their first win of the season. The teams didn’t get doubles matches in, but it didn’t matter. A 5-1 record in singles play meant victory. Coming out on top were senior Alex Angermeier, junior Charbel Medlej, senior Tadesse Dubale, junior Nelson Rocha and senior Collin Kelley. The Jaguars play Stuart this afternoon at Sleepy Hollow at 4 p.m.
Girls Tennis (2-5): A Monday matchup with Stuart was rained out. The team fell to Mount Vernon 7-2 on Tuesday. They’ll host Stuart this afternoon at 4 p.m.
Boys Lacrosse (5-2): The boys have been idle since edging Yorktown 8-7 last Tuesday. They’ll travel to Washington-Lee tonight and Westfield on Saturday as they try to improve on a 5-2 record.
Girls Lacrosse (4-3): The girls faced off against Westfield last night, but results were too late at press time. Tonight’s 7:15 p.m. home game versus Washington-Lee is the girls’ senior night.
Softball (1-5): The girls’ last three games were cancelled, and though they played Washington-Lee at home last night, results were too late for press time. Next, they’ll travel to Edison for a 7 p.m. away game this Friday, April 24.

George C. Marshall High
Girls Lacrosse (3-4): Coming off their 7-5 win last Monday at South Lakes, the Marshall girls lacrosse team started a winning streak at Washington and Lee last Thursday, finishing 14-6. The girls’ Monday game at McLean High was cancelled. Next up for the girls is a home game this Friday, April 24, where they’ll play host to Thomas Jefferson High.
Girls Soccer (3-4): Last week, the girl’s soccer team battled against Langley, losing a heart breaker 2-1. They also played district rival Madison and lost 3-0 after injuries left some players out for the game. The girls look to continue their goal of building the program through player development next Tuesday, April 28 against Thomas Jefferson High School.
Softball (7-4): Last week, the Lady Statesmen softball team went three for three in the Liberty District, beating Thomas Jefferson, Langley and South Lakes High. The most exciting game of the week was last Tuesday, when the girls beat the Thomas Jefferson High Colonials. The Lady Statesman blew a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning, but stormed back and took the lead back in the seventh inning. Christine Grilliot had a great game, striking out 10 batters, leading the offense and combining with Lauren Santana for seven hits.
They looked to continue against the Langley Saxons. Christine Grilliot threw a complete game shutout and only gave up five hits. Elaine Bennett led the offense, hitting a RBI double in the fifth inning along with scoring later in the inning. In the seventh inning, Bennett added another RBI. The Statesman tried to finish the trifecta with a win last Friday night against South Lakes. The Statesman handled them 9-5 with solid offensive contribution from everyone. Olivia Ellis, Michelle Tilson, Christine Grilliot, Lauren Sanata and Kayla Marsh each had two hits. Their home game this Monday against Madison was cancelled and results from yesterday’s game at W.T. Woodson were too late for press time. Next up for the girls is an away game at Langley this Friday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m.

George Mason High
Baseball (7-3): The Mustangs opened district play with a win on the road against Manassas Park last Thursday. Junior Tyler Roth pitched five solid innings and picked up the win. Roth overcame a two-run first inning before settling in for the next four. The offense did almost all of its damage in the fourth inning where they exploded for eight runs thanks to some timely hitting by juniors PJ Anderson and Evans Mandes as well as freshman Max Kaplow. The trio combined for six of the team’s 12 total hits on the evening. After the Mustangs took the lead, putting Roth in line for the win, freshman Stephen Lubnow came in and closed the door pitching two scoreless innings.
“It’s always nice to win your Bull Run opener; it’s definitely always one of your goals,” said Coach Amerine. “The bottom of our order – Max, Evans and PJ – really carried us, which was also nice to see.”
The club followed up the victory with a second-consecutive Bull Run District win, thanks to the arm of junior Brian Lubnow, who pitched a gem in the home opener against Clarke County. Lubnow went the distance for the Mustangs in a complete game shutout, scattering eight strikeouts throughout the contest, and allowed just six hits. The only offense of the evening was provided by junior Mandes, who drove in Mike Ward on a double to deep left field in the bottom of the fourth. The boys played Strasburg last night, but results were too late for press time. Next up is a home game against Madison County this Friday, April 24 at 5 p.m.
Boys Soccer (5-2): The team improved to 3-0 in the Bull Run District last Tuesday night, beating Rappahannock County 5-0 thanks to an explosive second half. After not scoring until the final minute of the first half despite several attacks, the Mustangs began to click in the second half where they struck early and often. Junior Nick Smirniotopoulos netted two goals and also had an assist, his eighth of the season. Andrew Arias and Teddy Rueckert, also juniors, and sophomore Jordan Robarge all netted second-half goals for Mason as well. Rueckert, Jed Sakprayoopong and Alex Casteuble each picked up assists. The squad brought their 3-0 district record into their home opener on Tuesday against Strasburg, but results were too late for press time. “The big match is most likely this Thursday against Manassas Park,” said Coach Iwanicki. “Strasburg always plays hard against us but I don’t think they have improved enough to stay with us. If we could end the Bull Run first round 5-0, we would be in a great position to take our fifth straight regular season title.”
Boys Lacrosse (8-2): The Mason lacrosse team doubled-up Heritage High 12-6 last Wednesday night en route to the eighth victory in their first nine contests. The Mustangs’ defensive middies, Manuel Veiga-Diaz and Emilio Ramos played strong games, keeping the Heritage offense off balance and forcing low-percentage shots. Senior Tim Koning had an outstanding game as goalie, limiting second chances and sparking the offense with quick outlet passes. Senior Jake Schwind continued his dominance as the face-off specialist and seniors Josh Brew and Charlie Mann led the team in scoring.
The team had a tougher time on Thursday night at home against Broad Run where they suffered their second loss of the season by a score of 13-6. Broad Run’s offense was too much for Mason in the first half and jumped out to a big early lead. The Mustangs later solidified their defense but it was too little too late as they had already succumbed to a 6 goal deficit which proved to be insurmountable. “We didn’t do a good job maintaining possession on the offensive end, poor passing and catching and poor shot selection, which really limited our opportunities to score,” noted head coach Richard Costello.
Girls Lacrosse (6-2): The Lady Mustangs took an unfortunate 20-2 hit last Thursday at Broad Run High, breaking their six-game winning streak. Against Only Senior Attack Katie Fletcher and Sophomore Midfielder Abby Johansen scored a goal apiece. They played Potomac High at home yesterday, but results were too late for press time. Next up, the girls host Deep Run this Friday, April 24 at 7:15 p.m.
Softball (2-5): After having three games cancelled in a row following a 6-5 loss at Manassas Park High last Thursday, the girls are back in the game today at Strasburg. The starting time wasn’t announced before press time.

J.E.B. Stuart High
Baseball (3-6): Matchups with Yorktown and Falls Church were cancelled on Monday and Tuesday. They face Mount Vernon at home tonight at 6 p.m., and Washington-Lee tomorrow for any away game at 6 p.m.
Crew: The crew team had a fine showing at the Darrell Winslow Regatta last Saturday. Stuart rowers delivered a one-two punch in the men’s 2x. The tandem of Tarek Al-Khulaidy and Francis Kinney placed first, and Jacob Derzon and Alex Trakowski came in second. Other top finishers included Sarah Ritter and Abby Voss (2nd in the women’s 2x), Salma Abdel-Raheem, Lauren Davis, TK Snee, Kristine Viray and Erin Holland (5th place in the women’s 1st four heat B) and Peter Kuzmik, Nick Montgomery, Elliot Roth, Venzke and Kennel (5th place in the men’s 1st four heat B). The team will hit the water on Saturday, April 25 for the Al Urquia Regatta at 9 a.m.
Boys Soccer (4-5): The boys were shut by Yorktown on Friday for their third-consecutive loss. They battled Westfield yesterday, but the results weren’t available for press time. The Raiders face Mount Vernon at home tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Girls Soccer (1-6-1): The girls also fell to Yorktown, 4-1. A make-up game against Fairfax was played last night, but the score came in too late to print. They travel to Mount Vernon tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Boys Tennis (6-0): The Raiders tried to host Wakefield High last Tuesday afternoon but Mother Nature had other ideas. The team faced off against Washington-Lee yesterday afternoon, but the result was not available at press time. They have matches versus Falls Church and Mount Vernon today and tomorrow.
Girls Tennis (5-2): Rained cancelled Monday’s bout with Falls Church. They were able to get singles matches in before it was too wet. Doubles play will decide that one at a later date. The Lady Raiders hosted Washington-Lee yesterday, but results weren’t available at press time. They face Falls Church today at 4 p.m.
Boys Lacrosse (1-5): The boys’ game against Edison was rained out last Tuesday. They travel to Mount Vernon at 7 p.m. today and Washington-Lee on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Baseball (7-1): The Highlanders breezed past Langley High last Friday 8-1, and followed that up with 4-2 victory over Stone Bridge this Tuesday. The team faced Madison last night, but the score wasn’t available for press time. They face off at Thomas Jefferson tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
Boys Soccer (7-2): The team beat South Lakes High 3-1 last Friday and shutout W.T. Woodson 2-0 this Tuesday. They’ll face Langley tonight during a 7 p.m. away game.
Girls Soccer (7-1): The girls thumped South Lakes last Saturday 7-0, but couldn’t keep the momentum going into Tuesday’s contest with W.T. Woodson. The Lady Highlanders were shutout by the Cavaliers 3-0. The loss ruined their chances at a perfect season, but they play at Langley today at 5:30 p.m.
Boys Tennis (4-5): The team lost all nine matches versus Thomas Jefferson last Friday, and this Monday’s contest against South Lakes was rained out. They faced George C. Marshall yesterday, but results were not available at press time. The Highlanders hook up with Madison this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
Girls Tennis (3-5): The girls’ results mirrored the boys’. Although they fell to Thomas Jefferson, they managed to win a couple of matches. A meeting with Marshall was rained out, and results from yesterday’s contest with South Lakes didn’t come in time to print. The team plays at Madison this Friday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m.
