VPIS Hosts F.C. Community Yard Sale

The 42nd Annual Falls Church VPIS (Village Preservation & Improvement Society) Attic Treasures Sale will be held this Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

at the Falls Church Community Center (223 Little Falls St., Falls Church). Donations will be accepted tomorrow, May 1 prior to the community yard sale. For donation questions, call 703-241-7672. Those interested in volunteering for the event can call 703-241-7015.

FIRSTfriday Celebrates Month of May

May’s FIRSTfriday festivities will kick off this Friday, May 1 at various locations aroud the City of Falls Church. Red, White & Bleu Wine and Gourmet (127 S. Washington St., Falls Church) will be opening its doors for patrons wishing to sample an array of featured wines from 5 – 8 p.m. For more information, call 703-533-9463.
Keep the party going at Dogwood Tavern (132 W. Broad St., Falls Church), which will host its very own FIRSTfriday after party, featuring live music sans cover charge from 8 p.m. – closing. For more information, call 703-237-8333.

Falls Church Natives Recognized for Academics

Yonjae Kim of Falls Church was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2008 semester at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. To be selected for this honor, a student must earn a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, while taking a minimum of 14 credit hours. Kim is the son of Jinho and Jessica Kim and attended McLean High School. He is majoring in general engineering, and is expected to graduate in May 2012.
From Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va., Cadet Alexander Pennington was named to the president’s list. Pennington, a junior, is the son of Catherine and Geoffrey Pennington of Falls Church. His younger peers, 7th grader Andrew Pak and 8th grader Ryan Pile, made principal’s list. Pak is the son of In and Young Pak of Falls Church, while Pile is the son of Nancy Murphy, Esq. of Falls Church and Ruel Bagol Pile of Arlington.

 

Randolph-Macon Academy is a college-preparatory, coeducational boarding school for students in grades 6 – 12. President’s list students have earned a 4.0 GPA or above. Principal’s list honorees have earned between a 3.3 – 3.99 GPA. Kasha Marie Klinegores of Falls Church was named to the dean’s list of distinguished students for the fall 2008 semester at Roanoke College in Salem, Va. Klinegores is the daughter of David Kline and Dr. Connie Gores. In order to be named to the dean’s list at Roanoke College, a student must be enrolled in at least four units during the term and earn a GPA of at least 3.50.

O’Meara Talks Hostas at Community Center

On Wednesday, May 6, the Falls Church Community Center (223 Little Falls St., Falls Church) will welcome Karen O’Meara, vice president of the Potomac Hosta Club, for a garden talk about hostas at 7:30 p.m. This event is open to the public. For more information, call 703-248-5077.

LCNV Announce Date Changes for Tutor Training

Per a previous mention in the News-Press of sought-after volunteers for the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia (LCNV), the rescheduled dates for basic literary tutors training are now May 16, May 30 and June 6, instead of May 9, May 16 and May 30.
These consecutive Saturday training sessions will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the LCNV of the James Lee Community Center (2855 Annandale Rd., Falls Church). More than 150 new volunteer tutors are needed to help area adults learn to speak, read and write English. For more information, call 703-237-0866 or visit www.lcnv.org.

Arlington’s Murphy Appears On ‘Jeopardy’

Liz Murphy, a 30-year-old Foreign Service officer from Arlington, appeared on “Jeopardy” last Thursday evening. Murphy, an A.B. history undergraduate from Harvard University enjoys spending her free time reading, cooking and traveling. How much money Murphy may have won is not yet known.
“I was out of my mind with anticipation,” said Murphy. “This experience has been one of the most exciting and fun opportunities ever.”

McLean Cinco de Mayo Celebrations Offered to Kids

The McLean Community Center (1234 Ingleside Ave., Falls Church) will be hosting Cinco de Mayo parties for fifth and sixth graders this Friday, May 1 from 7 – 9 p.m. The children’s event costs $20 for McLean Community Center district residents and $25 for all other attendees.
Festivities will include music, dancing, games, videos, prizes and more. Registration can be done in person, by mail, by fax (703-556-0547) or online by visiting www.mcleancenter.org. Partnership for Youth Hosts Jazz Concert

Promote mentoring and aid students on suspension from school in Falls Church and Fairfax County while enjoying the jazz of Ericka Ovette and the Stolen Moments Jazz Quintet. This concert for the Fairfax Partnership for Youth begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 at the Burke Presbyterian Church (5690 Oak Leather Dr., Burke). Tickets are $25 each. Falls Church Rotary to Hold Club Assembly

The Falls Church Rotary Club will have a Club Assembly to discuss club activities today, Thursday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m. The dinner meeting will be held at Harvest Moon Restaurant (7260 Arlington Blvd., Falls Church). Grand Dérangement Rounds Out Alden Artist Series

F.C. Senior Center Hosts Array of Thursday Events

The Falls Church Senior Center (223 Little Falls St., Falls Church) will be hosting an array of events today, Thursday, April 30. From 10 a.m. – noon, the Center’s walking group will get moving, starting at Roosevelt Park. Starting at the same time, a “French Conversation” meeting will take place in the Teen Center. 25th Annual Capital Hospice Plant Sale Kicks Off

The 25th Annual Capital Hospice Plant Sale will be held this Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Capital Hospice’s Halquist Memorial Inpatient Center (4715 N. 15th St., Arlington).
Sale items include native plants, perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, bulbs, ground cover and gardening items. Admission is free and refreshments will be available. All of the proceeds go to the Hospice Landscape Fund, which aids maintenance of the grounds and gardens at Capital Hospice’s Acute Care Facility. For more information, call 703-820-1311.

Foust to Appear at 14th Annual Derby Benefit

The 14th Annual PRS Kentucky Derby Benefit will be held on Saturday, May 2 from 4:30 – 8 p.m., at a home in Great Falls.
