McLean High’s Hedge Scores High on SAT

Hegde received a perfect score on verbal and writing, missing perfection by just 10 points in mathematics.

Local H.S. Minority Students Awarded Scholarships

The Northern Virginia Urban League hosted its 19th Annual Community Service & Scholarship Awards Dinner last Friday, April 17 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner. The theme was “Saluting Black Enterprise Magazine’s Top 100 Largest Black-Owned Businesses in Northern Virginia.” College scholarships totaling $50,000 were awarded to 10 area high school minority students.
Among those honored, were Rebecca Bergena of Washington-Lee High, Robert Mack Cordell II and Chadwick Edward Eason of Mount Vernon High, Yasir Hussein of T.C. Williams High, Keith Michael Phox of Hayfield High, Eric Nicole Shockley of South Lakes High and Ariell Thompson of Thomas Edison High.

Sister City Display to Feature Student Artwork

SNmason.jpgWinners of the Kokolopori Student Art Contest will be recognized and their artwork displayed this Friday, May 1 as part of Falls Church’s FIRSTfriday festivities at 7 p.m. at the F.A. McGonegal Showroom (212 N. West St., Falls Church).
The public is invited to a brief ceremony and reception in their honor. Students depicted people at work and play in Falls Church’s sister city, Kokolopori, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. For more information, call 703-533-4443.

Longfellow M.S. Knowledge Master’s Scores Impress

Last Wednesday, a team of 15 students from Longfellow Middle School called the Longfellow Knowledge Masters Open Team answered 197 questions correctly and scored 1755 out of 2000 possible points 52nd Knowledge Master Open academic competition. The score was good enough for first in the state of Virginia and first in the nation.
Team members include Captain Madelyn Paquette, Jonathan Leidenheimer, Carrie Murton, Nadege Aoki, Stephen Chretien, Alex Dalzell, Alec Brenner, Jane Berkowitz, Isabella Liu, James Bollinger, Michael Sanders, Michael Goodsen, Sarah Kinniburgh, Timothy Sheridan and Nick Kemp. The Knowledge Master Open is hosted by Academic Hallmarks, a Colorado publishing firm. Complete contest results and sample questions are available at www.greatauk.com.
