Though Chef Scott may have moved on, Argia’s kitchen remains in the capable hands of Chef Aimee Suyehiro. The restaurant still participates in the annual Washington, D.C. Restaurant Week, an event that allows restaurants to present their awe-inspiring, multi-course meals for a fixed price, joining 180 of the metropolitan area’s finest restaurants.
Argia’s has enjoyed a long list of praises since it opened its doors in 2000 from Washingtonian Magazine, The Washington Post and The Barstool. Argia’s does not miss in any category in their reviews: food, wine and atmosphere are all praised.
The restaurant is beautiful from the inside-out: walking in the front door, dimmed lights set a charming mood for a restaurant that appears to be regularly alive with smiling servers and a good, but not excessive crowd. A large bar occupies most of what can be seen from the entrance, but Argia’s opens up into a spacious and elegant restaurant with framed pictures and paintings to set the mood. Wall murals are the work of local artist, Thomas Mullaney.
If it is a particularly nice afternoon or evening, Argia’s gorgeous and comfortable patio is the place to eat. Surrounded by germanium, berbena and helichrysum-filled flower boxes as well as a stone fountain, the outdoor seating is comfortable and the surroundings are refreshing and intimate.
Argia’s offers an excellent deal on Mondays, serving bottles of wine for half price, an offer too hard, apparently, to refuse by the looks of the busy restaurant on a Monday evening when regional wines from Italy flowed freely at most tables. Also, Tuesday night is family night, where all family-sized portions are 10 percent off.
The pasta is homemade, with the exception of their gluten-free pasta that can be served upon request. Argia’s pizza dough is also fresh from the kitchen.
For the lighter appetite, the insalata di spinaci ($9.95) is a fine salad served with fresh spinach, beets, pine nuts, apples, red onions and goat cheese tossed with sherry mustard vinaigrette. For a larger party, family style salads can be ordered for every one to try for $16.95.
Nothing says elegance like pizza at Argia’s and they should not be overlooked. One particularly mouth watering pie is the purpetti pizza ($12.95), which is topped with sliced meatballs, fresh mozzarella, red onions and sun-dried tomato pesto. Toppings are hardly limited, and customers can add anything to their pizza from anchovies to zucchini upon request.
If pasta is what you crave, you will not be disappointed – the homemade pasta is delicious. The lasagne con carne ($15.95) is a fantastic dish that is layered with hearty meat and cheese filling. Family style lasagna is also available for $25.95.
Those who are looking for a great meal that is more health and carb conscious will also be satisfied at Argia’s. The pollo piccata ($16.95) is chicken scallopine served with sautéed seasonal vegetables and a lemon-caper sauce. Family style is also available for $28.95. Bon appetit!
