Falls Church Grooves to an Indonesian Beat

Creative Cauldron’s “Play On” month-long music series brought a slice of Indonesian culture to the Falls Church stage last Sunday with a gamelan music and dance performance.

The troupe Gamelan Wrhatnalan, from Germantown, Md., came to ArtSpace in downtown Falls Church with an elaborate arrangement of costumed dancers grooving to the beat of traditional Indonesian music, performed by musicians playing a wide variety of drums, gongs, flutes, allophones and cymbals.

Following the performance, attendees got a chance firsthand to discuss and interact with the gamelan troupe, with a series of workshop programs introducing different gamelan styles and dance forms. They were also entertained by a wayang play, using shadow puppets.
