Winning out in a heated three-way race for best sushi in the News-Press’ “Best of Falls Church” is the three-year-old Koi Koi Restaurant on the plaza of The Spectrum at 450 W. Broad St.

Owner Kyung Pil Chang attributes the restaurant’s success to the combination of freshness and affordability of its sushi and sashimi. Fresh fish is delivered daily and translated into a wide selection of sushi roles and combinations, including fresh and baked varieties.

Although the restaurant struggled mightily soon after it opened during the construction phase of The Spectrum and its plaza, it has enjoyed a marked pick up in business since the opening last month of the Mad Fox Brewing Company across the plaza, due to its new visibility to the large crowds that have been packing into the Mad Fox in its opening weeks.

Chang came to the U.S. 10 years ago after running a restaurant similar to Koi Koi in South Korea. He first moved to Los Angeles where he was a sushi cook before coming to this area to open his own restaurant here.

He considered his personal favorites on his extensive menu to be the Las Vegas Roll (deep fried four kinds of fish, crab, avocado and cream cheese) and the House Special Roll (soft shell crab with seared tuna on top). A full array of salads, appetizers, tempura and grilled main dishes, u-don and party platters are also on the menu.
