Mason Baseball All-Decade Team Released

George Mason High School announced its All-Decade team for baseball this week. Mason coaches made the selections based on performance and accomplishments during the 2000-2009 school years.

The team joins previously announced Mustang All-Decade teams for wrestling and boys and girls soccer.

The All-Decade baseball team selections are as follows (graduation dates are in parentheses):

Catcher – Matt Foley (2006) – Member of two Bull Run District Championship teams; versatile player who made transition to catcher for senior year; career average of .346 (56-162).

First Base – Andy Koelz (2003) – Big powerful hitter, four-year varsity player; was the offensive anchor for George Mason during the first part of the decade.

Second Base – Alex Prewitt (2008) – Outstanding offensive player for the Mustangs, career average of .380 (73-192) with 57 runs scored and 39 stolen bases in his three years on varsity. Played at Tufts University.

Third Base – John Schwengel (2006) – Tough gritty four-year varsity player, two-time All-District at two positions, also has 11 career wins as a pitcher, including a 6-1 season in 2006.

Shortstop – Jimmy Piscopo (2007) – Four-year varsity player, tremendous athlete who created headaches for opposing pitchers with his speed. Career average of .360 (83-230) with 89 runs scored, 60 stolen bases, and 39 RBIs from the leadoff spot. Played at Randolph-Macon College.

Outfield – Nick Thomas (2000) – Deadly left-handed hitter and pitcher who wreaked havoc on the Bull Run District in the early part of the decade. Played at UVA-Wise.

Outfield – Paul Mene (2006) – Three-year varsity player, silky smooth defensive outfielder with a career average of .323 (55-170), 37 runs scored, and 42 RBIs. Played at Union College.

Outfield – Brandon Ting (2006) – Two-year varsity player with a career average of .318 (37-116), 24 runs, and 20 RBIs. Did not commit an error during two years in outfield.

Designated Hitter – Andrew Yancey (2004) – Had a breakout senior year in which he hit .385 after shoulder injury limited him to be a DH only, earning All-Region honors. Four-year varsity player.

Pitcher – Mike Straub (2008) – Compiled 9 wins for the Mustangs during the decade with 157 strikeouts during his dominating two-year varsity career. Played at the University of Mary Washington and Lynchburg College.

Pitcher – Brian Lubnow (2010) – A four-year varsity player compiled 9 wins as sophomore and junior (added 7 more as senior); ended career with 174 strikeouts.

Player of Decade – Pitcher/Utility – Byron Mendenhall (2007) – A four-year varsity player, established himself as one of the best pitchers in state with 25 career wins at GM, 3 saves, 295 career strikeouts and only 47 walks. Two-time Player of the Year in Bull Run District. Played at Randolph-Macon College.

Team of Decade – 2006 – Bull Run District Regular Season and Tournament Champions. 19-4 record, 12-0 in Bull Run play. Lost narrowly in regional semi-finals to eventual state champion.
