The George Mason High School girls basketball team beat Strasburg at home tonight, 68-33, advancing to the next round in the Region B tournament.

“We played this team [Strasburg] before, and we know how they play,” freshman Ashley Alexander said. “We just had to stay focused.”

It took the first quarter for the Lady Mustangs to start shutting down Strasburg’s offense. But once they did, the game was over for the Rams.

Mason held their opponent scoreless for 15 points in the end of the second and beginning of the third quarter, going from 28-18 to 43-18.

“It’s been our defense all year,” Coach LaBryant Thomas said. “How our defense goes, it’s how we go.”

As Mason kept the pressure on defense, the Rams started fouling, and giving the Lady Mustangs the opportunity to score. Sophomore Stephanie Cheney led Mason with 14 points.

The Lady Mustangs play their rival, Clarke County High School, tonight for the regional semi-finals.

“For the next game, we just got to step it up,” Alexander said. “For us, focus is the key. We got the skills, we just have to put all together.”

Thursday’s game will be the fourth time the teams play each other this year.

“I’m worried, Clarke is a very good team,” Thomas said. “Any time you play a team four times, anything can happen. It’s that time of the year, you lose you go home. So it’s a big game for us tomorrow.”

Mason plays Clarke at Strasburg tonight at 7 p.m.
