Nearby Robbery Causes Officials to Secure Glen Forest Elementary

Not ‘lockdown,’ says Fairfax County Police

An armed robbery this morning at Sabina’s Joyeria in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County caused some concern at nearby Glen Forest Elementary.

According to Fairfax County Police Spokesman Don Gotthardt, the school was put on “secure the building” status for part of the morning, which means that the exterior doors of the school are to be locked and outdoor activities are to be cancelled.  Despite reports that this was a “lockdown,” Gotthardt said “lockdown is used to describe enhanced security measures taken to protect against potentially violent intruders.”

The robbery occurred at about 10:30 a.m. this morning.  According to a statement from the Fairfax County Police Department, four men, either white or Hispanic, entered the business and announced the robbery. They then fled on foot with an unknown amount of jewelry. An employee followed them out, and shots were fired by at least one of the suspects.  No one was injured in the incident.

Two employees, two adult customers and three children were in the store at the time of the robbery.
