Debut Mason Pitcher Seals Win Against Middleburg

The George Mason High School varsity baseball team ran its record to 4-1 with a victory Thursday over Middleburg Academy, 11-7. Junior Trevor Simpson started on the mound and got the win in his varsity pitching debut. Leading Mason at the plate were junior Jon Freeman (3 for 4, with two doubles, a single and 3 RBIs), and junior Max Kaplow (3 for 4 with a double, two singles and 1 RBI).

The George Mason High School varsity baseball team ran its record to 4-1 with a victory Thursday over Middleburg Academy, 11-7. Junior Trevor Simpson started on the mound and got the win in his varsity pitching debut. Leading Mason at the plate were junior Jon Freeman (3 for 4, with two doubles, a single and 3 RBIs), and junior Max Kaplow (3 for 4 with a double, two singles and 1 RBI).

Mason’s balanced hitting attack featured five others driving in runs: senior Paul Weber (double, single), junior Jack Trainor (sacrifice fly), junior Stephen Lubnow (two singles), senior Tyler Duncan (double), and sophomore Lucas Cherry (two singles and two RBIs), Also, senior Chris Horneman and sophomore Nick Bourbeau singled.

Simpson pitched four innings and retired with the Mustangs leading 7-4. Duncan was the middle reliever, carrying Mason to the final inning, when Lubnow closed.

Mason’s next game is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. against Madison County of the Bull Run District, although rain is in the forecast.

But the varsity boys weren’t the only winners in Mason baseball this week. JV baseball rolled at Manassas Park Thursday, 14-1, and on Wednesday they edged Marshall, 9-8. varsity softball hosted Park and mashed them, 15-0, while JV softball went to Park and romped, 17-0.
