Appearing before the McLean Citizens Association tonight were Falls Church City Manager Wyatt Shields, Mayor Nader Baroukh and Vice Mayor David Snyder at the McLean Community Center. Shields led a presentation on reasons for the Falls Church Water System’s need for an eight-cent rate increase, effective Aug. 1 if the City Council gives its final OK next Monday.

Some inaccurate data about the amount of return the City took as a “return on investment” asserted by one board member was corrected in an otherwise civil get of exchanges with board members. Shields explained that the scale of the Fairfax Water System accounts for its lower costs, but that the Falls Church system has an excellent record of service and commitment to providing the best water on a reliable basis, and lower than average costs for the region. Structural differences between the two systems are simply a fact of life for which there are no simple solutions, he explained.
