Mason Girls Win, to State Title Game Vs. Gate City Saturday

The George Mason High School Mustang girls basketball team returns for a second straight year to the Virginia Group A Division 2 semifinals here tonight, facing the Glenvar Highlanders from Salem. Mason came through the pre-states season with a 17-5 record before trouncing Sussex Central last Saturday, and Glenvar finished at 18-4, with a quarterfinal win over Virginia High last weekend. Tip off is set for just before 9 p.m. tonight. The winner tonight will play Gate City, which edged Stuarts Draft earlier tonight.

10:23 p.m. The George Mason High School Lady Mustangs head to the VHSL State Finals, dropping Glenvar 64-48 tonight in Richmond.

10:23 p.m. Mason Girls win 64-48.

10:21 p.m. Mason up 14, 62-48, with 1:03 remaining.

10:18 p.m. 1:31 remaining, Mason up 59-48

10:17 p.m. Under 2 minutes left to play and Mason holds a 58-46 lead.

10:15 p.m. With 3:01 left in the game, Mason leads Glenvar 58-46.

10:10 p.m. 4:33 left, Mason up 55-45.

10:09 p.m. 5:06 left in the game, Mason leads 55-42.

10:07 p.m. 6:03 to go in the game, 51-39 Mason leads.

10:04 p.m. Mason up 47-37 with 6:59 left in game

10:02 p.m. Mason 45-36 after 3. Mason saw a 43-28 lead with 2:25 left evaporate to 44-36 until a last second free throw by Katie Goodwin.

9:57 p.m. Mason up 43-33 with 1:04 left in third

9:55 p.m. 43-28 Mason 2:23 left in 3rd, 10 points for Mason’s Kane in period so far.

9:51 p.m. 3:21 in 3rd Mason leads Glenvar, 41-27.

9:48 p.m. 4:33 in 3rd, Mason 8-0 in third period for 37-25 lead

9:45 p.m. 35-25, Mason leads as Kane scores at 5:50 in third

9:44 p.m. 33-25 Mason as Ashley Alexander scores to open the third period and Leah Roth follows with a set shot.

9:40 p.m. Glenvar scored seven straight points, while holding Mason scoreless, in the first four minutes of the 2nd period before Lauren Kane scored on a layin with 4:08 left. Then Jaya Chavern hit a clutch three-pointer and Mason regained a 23-22 lead, and held it with a bucket by Katie Goodwin, two free throws by Stephanie Cheney and a bucket just before the half by Krista Kelly. Mason lost the rebounding edge in the period, trailing Glenvar in that department 28-22.

9:31 p.m. Halftime 29-25 Mason.

9:29 p.m. Mason retakes lead with 9 straight points, 27-22 with 1:27 left in 2nd.

9:23 p.m. 7 straight Glenvar points puts them 22-19 over Mason with 5:10 left in second period. Mason calls timeout.

9:17 p.m. 18-15 Mason after first quarter. Rebounding by Katie Goodwin key to holding the lead after Mason’s fast start. Kane with 7 points.

9:06 p.m. Mason leaps to 9-4 lead in first 3 minutes, with three-pointer and two free throws by Lauren Kane.
