Volleyball

After blanking the team from Central High School, 3-0, in the district quarterfinals last week, the George Mason team was eliminated in its district semifinal game against Clarke County High School, 3-1.

Mason volleyball players junior Dana Sembera, junior Sally Karstens, and senior Maddie Johnson all earned first-team all-district honors.

The team advanced to regional competition this week, and made a comeback to beat Bluestone High School, 3-2, on Tuesday. The team will move on to the regional semifinals on Thursday to take on Goochland High School.

Cross Country

The boys and girls cross country teams both finished second at the regional meet last Wednesday and qualified to move on to the state meet.

The Mason boys team was among sixteen total teams competing. Three Mason boys placed among the top 15 runners – seniors Jesse Schaffer (sixth) and Jeremy K. Brown (seventh), and junior Austin Gogal (14th).

The Mason girls team was up against a dozen other teams. Freshman Blaise Sevier placed fourth, and freshman Corinne Carson also broke into the top 15 with a 13th-place finish.

Both teams look forward to state-level competition this Saturday at Great Meadow. This will be the second year in a row that Mason has sent both its boys and girls cross country teams to states.

Football

The George Mason High School football team ended its season last Friday with a loss to Manassas Park High School, 54-13. The Mustangs close their 2012 football season with a 1-9 record, the single victory won against John Champe High School last month. Still, the Mustangs had something to celebrate last Friday night. As it was the final home game of the season, the team’s senior players were feted at the game.
