Walter Mess, founder of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, died Sunday night. Conflicting birth certificates listed him at age 100 and 98. His passing was first made public at today’s Memorial Day service in Falls Church. Mess was a pioneering operative of the OSS during World War II.

Walter Mess fit the description of an ideal OSS candidate: “a Ph.D. who
can win a bar fight.” He served as an influential member of the Board of
Directors of The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Society (www.osssociety.org),
a nonprofit organization the celebrates the historic accomplishments of
the World War II predecessor to the C.I.A. and the U.S. Special
Operations Command. He will greatly missed and never forgotten.
