The U.S. Army major general killed on Tuesday in an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan was a resident of Falls Church. Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene, a 34-year Army veteran and a 2-star general, was the highest-ranking U.S. military officer killed in combat since 1970. Greene, 55, was shot to death in an attack that wounded 15 others.

Falls Church Vice Mayor David Snyder issued the following statement to the News-Press today: “Our entire community shares in the grief of the family and we will support them.It is a tragic reminder of how many of our citizens are engaged in public service on behalf of our country and in support of higher ideals than self-interest.”

The sacrifice of this highly decorated soldier and his family deserves more tribute and coverage than being relegated to the News Brief with Hazardous Waste Dump, Silver Line Ridership, etc.
