Del. Marcus Simon, the Democrat who represents the 53rd District in the State legislature that includes the City of Falls Church, is slated to file a bill to repeal statutes in the state code prohibiting same-sex marriages and civil unions.
The U.S. Supreme Court already has ruled that Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriages is unenforceable, but the commonwealth’s code should reflect that, Simon said. “Sometimes symbolism is important,” he said. “In 1967 in Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court ruled Virginia’s ban on interracial marriage was unconstitutional, but the statute remained on the books until the 1980s. Hopefully, this time around, we can be on the right side of history.”
