On Monday, March 28, the first day after the Mustangs’ spring break, the George Mason girls varsity lacrosse team returned to their home field to take on the 6A Washington-Lee Generals in a non-conference game. And the Mustangs defeated the Generals in a 21-3 rout.

As in their last game, the Mustangs started slow and both teams turned over the ball on a number of occasions until junior Sarah Lubnow netted the first goal of the game at the 20:13 mark of the first half. Sophomore Amy Roche followed at the 17:45 minute mark with an assist by junior Hannah Hiscott.

The two goals seemed to shake the spring break fog from the George Mason team because after that there were goals from Hiscott assisted by Lubnow, Roche netted her second with an assist by Sophomore Claire Trundle, junior Lydia Gorman scored at the 12:42 mark with an assist from Lubnow, and Hiscott followed 10 seconds later with an assist from Roche.

The Washington-Lee Generals’ Caroline Laybourn got her team on the board with a goal at the 8:55 mark of the first half and her teammate Amelia Martin followed up 2 minutes later to make it a 6-2 game.

The two back-to-back Generals goals seemed to wake up the Mustangs again because Roche then scored 22 seconds later with an assist from freshman Selwyn Hemingway and before the half ended Mason placed another five behind the Washington-Lee goalie with goals from Hiscott, sophomore Claire Hiscott, sophomore Elizabeth Dodge and freshman Alex Biggs finished to make it a 12-2 score at the half.

As in the last game, with the Mustangs maintaining a healthy lead, coach Courtney Gibbons took advantage of resting her starters and alternates to inject sophomore reserves Lydia Grund, Olivia Cipriano and Kalena Wojtala into the game before the half ended and they continued to play as the new half started.

This time Mason started fast with a goal by Lubnow one minute into the half. Hiscott followed two minutes later, then Lubnow, Hiscott assisted by freshman Harmony Lajeunesse, Alex Biggs, Hannah Hiscott, Claire Hiscott, and Roche scored for the Mustangs before the Washington-Lee’s Laybourn scored again making it a 20-3 game.

Gorman finished the scoring at the 1:07 mark of the second half to bring the score to 21-3. Seven different Mustangs scored during the game with assistants from eight different teammates. Hannah Hiscott led all players with five goals and an assist in the game.

The Varsity Mustangs take the home field again this evening with a game against Brighton High School out of New York.
