Students from the Montessori school Brooksfield Academy in McLean wanted to share their crop and love of gardening with a group of elderly veterans of the U.S. military in honor of Giving Tuesday, which was held on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
In order to do that, students created 70 lavender aromatherapy sachets to give to the residents of Vinson Hall Retirement Community, which is located just up the street from the school. The students at Brooksfield School have an organic garden with a variety of plants, herbs and vegetables.
Students pulled the seeds of lavender off the stem, and poured two spoonfuls into each sachet. Students, teachers, and parents then walked to Vinson Hall and hand delivered the sachets to the residents.
This project was a part of Jane Goodall’s “Roots and Shoots” program. Roots and Shoots is a global youth-led community action program, inspired by Goodall, to make the world a better place. Students learned firsthand, the healing powers of lavender and community during the giving season.
